garden inspired flower design

I like to take a quick turn around the garden every evening, when the weather allows. The garden sits amongst farm land and hills in South Wales, so it is a small pocket of cultivation in a wild landscape. I am always excited to see a new flower or seedling emerge and I love to see the wild honeysuckle and ferns taking over their areas of the garden. I always take note of what inspires me, whether it is seasonal colour or the shape and form of plants and flowers.

My garden inspired designs fit well into every setting. I love to see small bowls of flowers decorating tables at events, or larger sprawling installations at marquee or country house weddings. Personally I feel just having some of the outdoors brought into a space transforms it into something magical. Swathes of foliage and wild garden roses can not only look dramatic, but also make a space calming at the same time.

Scent is a huge factor when choosing flowers and foliage for weddings and events. I delight in walking past the mock orange and rambling roses in June, when their weighty beautiful fragrance is at its strongest. For a June wedding, these flowers are a must.

If heavily fragranced flowers are not your thing, then you might want to consider subtle perfumed foliage like mint or rosemary. These have a wild freshness and look lovely arranged alongside flowers in a bouquet.

Colour is probably the first thing that is mentioned when discussing wedding and event flowers. Seasonal colours can be obvious, for example most people tend to envisage oranges and browns when thinking of an Autumn flower colour palette. But they don’t have to be! I love the subtle peachy tones of late flowering dahlias mixed in with dusky lilac shades. There are a lot of pale purple flowers in Autumn, such as verbena and scabious. Rustling golden coloured grasses would add a nod to the changing season, mimicking the fatigued hedgerows and meadows, ready to retire into Winter.
